Sterile water

Sterile water contains no preservative. It's sterile at the moment of use, but once a vial is punctured, it no longer has any mechanism to inhibit microbial growth. For research applications, sterile water is generally treated as single-use or very short-window use after opening.

Bacteriostatic water

Bacteriostatic water contains a small concentration of benzyl alcohol (typically around 0.9%), which inhibits bacterial growth and allows a multi-dose vial to be accessed repeatedly over a longer window without the same contamination risk as plain sterile water. This is why it's the more common choice for multi-dose research vials.

A note on benzyl alcohol sensitivity

Benzyl alcohol preservative is not appropriate for every application — some smaller peptides or specific research protocols call for preservative-free diluent to avoid interaction effects. This is a protocol-specific decision rather than a universal rule, and it's worth checking what a given research procedure calls for rather than defaulting automatically.

pH stability considerations

Some peptides are sensitive to pH shifts introduced by certain diluents, which can accelerate degradation. Where a compound's documentation specifies a particular diluent or pH range, following that guidance preserves stability better than a generic default choice.
